Who We Are: UKSWA CIC - Promoting Social Justice for Social Workers & Students


UKSWA CIC, a non-profit charitable organization located in Chichester, West Sussex, has a remarkable story. It was established in October 2015 by Hilda Chehore, who was inspired by personal experiences. Initially, our organization focused on supporting Social Workers and Students from Zimbabwe. In 2017, we expanded our reach to the UK, offering aid and assistance to all Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) social workers and students residing in the country.


Here at UKSWA CIC, our dedication lies in promoting social justice and instigating positive change. Our mission involves providing social work education and challenging oppressive and racist practices within social work organizations. By doing so, our aim is to improve working conditions for social workers and students, thus contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society.

What We Offer: Promoting Social Justice and Empowering Social Workers


At UKSWA, we offer a range of services and initiatives aimed at promoting social justice, empowering social workers, and improving conditions for all. Our offerings include:


  1. Social Work Education: We provide comprehensive social work education programs to equip social workers with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate complex challenges in their field.
  2. Challenging Anti-Oppressive Practices: We actively challenge anti-oppressive and anti-racist practices within social work organizations, advocating for a more inclusive and equitable profession.
  3. Enhanced Life Opportunities for Black Communities: We strive to increase life opportunities for Black communities by addressing systemic barriers and promoting equal access to resources and opportunities.
  4. Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence Building: We aim to improve the self-esteem and self-confidence of all social workers, empowering them to thrive in their professional roles.
  5. Better Placements for Black Student Social Workers: We work towards securing better placements for Black student social workers, ensuring they have valuable learning experiences to support their career development.
  6. Voice for Social Workers: Through our trade union, we act as a strong voice for social workers, advocating for their rights and well-being. We actively contribute to policy development and author books on relevant topics.
  7. Improved Working Conditions: We strive for better working conditions for all social workers, fostering supportive and inclusive environments that promote professional growth and well-being.
  8. Support for Black Communities: We provide dedicated support for Black communities, addressing their unique challenges and needs within the social work profession.
  9. One-to-One Member Support: We offer personalized one-to-one support to our members, ensuring they receive the guidance and assistance they need.
  10. Adaptation Program for Overseas Trained Social Workers: We provide a specialized adaptation program for social workers trained overseas, assisting them in transitioning to the UK social work context.
